Discussion forums are included on most of the more popular internet websites today. They give enthusiasts of various subjects a place to meet and interact with others who share their interest. The term forum has come to represent the evolution of the bulletin board. In the past a bulletin board was a place where people could post discussion topics and respond. There was little color or graphics capability, and even less in the way of user profiles. All that would often show was a name you chose or your email address. Current discussion forums have made it much easier for people to contact one another as well as make topics livelier by including pictures, sound clips and even video.

If you are interesting in a particular topic then your best bet for finding relevant, current forums is to perform a query using your favorite search engine. If you include the handle discussion forums it will often yield better results. Each forum usually has its own registration procedure you need to follow, which helps moderators keep track of users and control unwanted posts and posters.

It might not seem like such a tough job, but moderating a forum can be a challenge because of the number of posts you might be responsible for reading and, if necessary, edit. There are plenty of people who will behave disruptively and require your action. The best way to handle a large forum would be to have assistants as well as an integrated complaint system that will notify you if users are offended by someones comments.

This isnt normally practical, although users can set their computers and IM services to run overnight to finish the process.

You should be very careful about downloading material from strangers because there are literally thousands of viruses that have been embedded in files across the net. Even files from close friends might have come from unknown sources so be sure to run a virus check before opening any files. Also be careful about downloading pirated material, as the penalties for possessing such files get stiffer as the problem grows.

These services are kept free to non-subscribers by featuring advertising panes within the interface. They are constantly cycled between advertisers, so as you are chatting with friends the ads will periodically change. Paying for a premium upgrade will disable the advertising pane.
